Players: Black Canary, Speedy Location(s): The Queen family home Plot Summary: Dinah returns to Star City to check up on Mia. --
In reality, it hadn't been that long ago that she was in Star City; even so, it still felt like it had been a lifetime ago. Not long ago, on an evening not unlike this one, Dinah would have been sitting inside the building instead of standing upon it as she presently was. She would have been sitting around the dinner table, either laughing at someone's comment or chiding someone else for the same reason (most likely Mia - the mouth on that girl). Someone would help her clear the plates; she never subjected her family to her cooking, so she always was tasked with the clean-up. They would all watch a movie, or play a game, or simply sit around and poke fun at one another. She would give everyone a kiss on the forehead before bidding them goodnight, then retiring to her own bed with Ollie at her side. They would have talked quietly for a short while before falling asleep, his arm around her waist and their breathing in sync.
Some days, Dinah would kill to get that back. Some days, she missed it all so badly that she felt she might rip in two. Many times before had she suffered some kind of loss, but she couldn't say she had ever experienced something quite like this. Being in Gotham helped; silently she had to admit that she had partially returned to her hometown because being here in Star City was just too painful, and not just because she needed a change of scenery. Now that she was back, even for a short while, Dinah was glad that she had left. She felt that she had made a lot of progress since her return to Gotham, and she knew that such would have been impossible here. Everywhere she looked were reminders of the family and the life that were no more.
It took a great amount of effort to remember that some aspects of that life still existed, and she needed to treasure them. One source of joy that remained in Star City was Mia. The girl was like a daughter to Dinah; no matter how strained her relationship with Ollie was at the moment, that would never change. Though she kept in contact with both Mia and Connor on a regular basis, actually getting to see them was different. She had had a chance to visit with her stepson earlier, but with him now acting as the sole Green Arrow in Star City, his free time was extremely limited. Dinah doubted that Mia was in any different of a boat. The two were doing a good job, though; she was proud of both of them. They had both grown up a lot, though she couldn't be sure that either of them had ever really been children. The blonde exhaled a sigh through her nose as she folded her arms across her chest. The fabric of her jacket creased at the elbows, reminding her that it really wasn't needed. Star City was a lot warmer than Gotham at night.
Morning was on its way, which meant that Mia should be getting home from patrol soon. Dinah took a seat on the edge of the rooftop, her legs dangling over the side and wind playing loosely with her blonde hair. She knew that Mia had been taking all of this just as hard - if not harder - than she had. As much as she wanted to see a happy, smiling girl returning from a successful night of defending her home, she knew better than to expect as much.

Mia sighed as she drove down the streets of Star City on her beautiful motorcycle. The pretty baby of Speedy was fast, sleek, and most of all, quiet. Not to mention her baby was totally environmentally friendly. She loved this motorcycle so much. She had offered Connor a ride home earlier but he just shook his head and said he would meet her there.
Typical Connor. She barely ever saw him out of costume anymore. Well, there were the few times that he would get into something else and meditate. It was at those times and when they went out grocery shopping that everything seemed normal. It was only for a few moments, but Mia could pretend nothing had changed.
It was a simple ruse that she used to fool herself though. The blonde archer knew that most days when she arrived home from school, it would only be Connor there to greet her. She did not even get a greeting from Connor much now. He was so busy being Green Arrow, he barely had time to think. She felt guilty for taking classes and having to cut down on patrol nights to study.
Speaking of classes, they started up last week. It was terrible for Mia. To go to college and pretend nothing was wrong. She knew the looks she got from other people, both she and Connor. They had been there at the trial of Oliver Queen. She knew the rumors that had gone around when Ollie had first legally taken her as his ward. That she had slept with him and such. There was no truth to them then and no truth to the new rumors either. Although, the one about her being Dinah and Ollie's love child was kind of funny. She wished that one had been true. It would not change how she viewed either of them. Ollie was her father and Dinah was her mother.
Mia was grateful that she had not cried while driving. It made it so much harder to see. As she speed down the road that led to the Queen household, she thought about the rumors of the forest starting to grow around Star. How supposedly, there was an archer living in there, who resembled the original Emerald archer. Mia knew it was Ollie. He was trying to watch over the city and his family from afar.IT pained her to not be able to go and see him. She was so busy though. Not to mention, she was pretty sure that the Star City government would not allow it.
Mia missed coming home from patrol and having someone there to talk to. To tell about everything that had gone on that night. Someone who would help with her injuries when she sustained them. Dinah used to be there. Sometimes it was Ollie, or Connor. Roy would sometimes stay over and he would always bring..
Mia swerved as she narrowly missed the turn to the final stretch of road to where she had called home. She couldn't bring herself to even think much about her. She had been responsible for protecting her, and had failed. She had listened to her niece cry out for her parents while trapped under a building and dying. She had been so alone and so scared. Mia could not even tell her she loved her. Mia had saved a girl who looked so much like Lian that night. Mia knew the nightmares would happen.
The nightmares, they were horrifying. Mia would fall asleep and be in a world filled with screams. She would see Star City falling to ruins before her eyes..Ollie being forced away from them, never to see them again. Dinah leaving them and Ollie. Roy in the hospital, missing his arm and screaming. Connor just standing there not being able to say or do anything due to shock. He would turn into a living statue. Those nightmares scared her. However, there was always the worst ones.
The night terrors were Mia would be forced into that world. She would be forced to relive it over and over again. It was world were Star City just continued to fall into more and more ruin as the bombs went off. Dinah had left them all. Ollie could not do anything to help, same with Connor. Although, they would not do anything to help her there. There she was not only rejected, she was shunned and sneered at for having HIV. The worst part was Lian. Her screams for her parents. Mia could see Lian under the rubble and how she could get out and be able to live. But Mia wasn't able to talk and so she had to watch as Lian died. It happened over and over and over again.
Mia would wake up screaming and covered in sweat from these terrors. there would be tears streaming down her face. if Connor wasn't the one waking her up, he would be there in less then a minute to help calm her down.
There were nights were Connor just seemed to know that Mia wouldn't be able to sleep at all due to the nightmares and they would end up in one of their beds. Connor would be holding Mia so she could sleep some. The same happened on nights when the terrors would not go away and Connor would get into her bed and hold her until she fell asleep. nothing else would happen, just sleep.
As Mia pulled into the driveway, the garage doors opening, she briefly thought she saw Dinah on the roof. She parked her baby in the garage and put her helmet and bow and arrows down, as well as her belt. Mia could not help but run to the roof. she had to see if Dinah was really there. Mia tore through the kitchen. As she ran up the stairs to the roof,, she hoped it really was Dinah.
Mia reached the destination and just stood there for a moment. Dinah was really here. Her mom was really home, even if it was just for a bit. She ran to Dinah, yelling.
"MOM!"[/b] Mia hugged Dinah tightly, not wanting to let go ever again. The tears started flowing and Mia made no effort to make them stop.
"Mom, i missed you so much."

Dinah stood at the sight of the motorcycle rolling into the garage. Mia was home. Part of her was extremely nervous. Would Mia think that she had abandoned them? Had she abandoned them? Dinah would never leave Mia or Connor, whether her marriage survived or not, but they might not understand that. They were just kids - she didn't expect them to understand the complication of a divorce. Eventually, she would probably return to Star City, but for now she just couldn't be here. At least she didn't have to worry about seeing Ollie while in the city limits.
It took only another minute or two before the door to the rooftop opened, and the blonde turned to look at the girl who had just joined her on the roof. At first, there was only silence, and Dinah felt the knot in the pit of her stomach growing larger. She wasn't sure what she would do if Mia resented her for moving to Gotham. The girl had already gone through so much in her life and she had never needed all of this. Not for the first time, the blonde felt a sudden flare of anger directed toward Ollie. She had never felt that Mia should be involved in all of this. Fighting crime was dangerous and it was nothing that a teenager should be involved in. Mia was an adult now and could make her own decisions, but Dinah wished that she had never been dragged in in the first place. Maybe then she would have been spared some of this pain - or if nothing else, the guilt.
When Mia ran to her, the worry vanished. Her arms wrapped around the girl, trapping her in a vice-like hug. "I missed you too, honey," Dinah murmured. "You have no idea." Being away from her and Connor was the hardest part of being in Gotham. At least the good news now was that being back on the JLA meant she had access to their teleporters, which would allow her to visit Star City much more often. It didn't make up for seeing them every day, but it would help. Dinah's arms tightened around Mia. Ordinarily, she had no problem with shedding tears. The ability to express emotions was not, as many seemed to believe, a weakness. Right now, however, Mia needed a shoulder to cry on, not someone to join in on the tears... though boy was it tempting.

Mia pulled away from the hug and was able to stop the flow of tears, finally. She wasn't mad at Dinah for leaving them. If Dinah had never wanted to see or hear from them again, well, then they never would have found her. So much had happened in Star City, there were so many memories. She knew the feeling of wanting to run away from them all. However, she couldn't have left Connor all alone.
"I was starting to get worried that you might love Connor more then me for a bit there, Mom."[/b]
Mia laughed jokingly. Sure, it had hurt a lot when Dinah left them. Going through Ollie's trial had been a highly emotional experience. It was one she never wanted to deal with ever again. Somehow, Connor and Mia's identities as Green Arrow and Speedy had been kept safe from the press that still sometimes hounded both of them. Connor just ignored them and walked past. Mia liked to pull her hand up into her sleeve and flip them off.
It didn't matter though. Dinah was home for a little bit. Mia had no idea for how long or why but, she was home. Mia was not letting any moment pass her by like this.
"So, you here on JLA/Birds of Prey stuff? Or did you just come by to see my pretty face again? Don't even try to BS me either."[/b]

To be honest, Dinah would have been perfectly content to stand there for a great while longer. She hadn't even realized just how much she missed Connor and Mia until she had come back to see them. Still, she would rather go inside and catch up with Mia than simply stand around on the rooftop for the rest of the night. The blonde's arms dropped to her side when Mia pulled away, then moved once more so that she could rest her hands on her hips. "Please. I don't think I could pick a favorite if I wanted to." While she and Mia had always shared the bond that came with being the only women in the house, both she and Connor equally occupied the space in her heart reserved for children. Her relationship with Roy had always been a bit different; he was too old to ever be mistaken for her biological son, so she had typically regarded him more as a kid brother. That being said, she loved all of them the same. Even the concept of loving one more than the other was a silly one.
The twisting in her gut was starting to settle as it became more and more apparent that Mia wasn't blatantly furious with her. She had hoped that that would be the case, but Dinah had known better than to discount the option. She was so lucky. She had some damn great kids. They always had been. A little rough around the edges at times, yes, but that only kept things interesting. Life was never dull with any of them around, and all in the same room? Forget any attempt at peace and quiet. She liked it that way, though. For Dinah, relaxation was great in theory but boring in practice. Amidst a healthy dose of chaos was where she found she tended to thrive.
Dinah chuckled. Mia had always had a fiery personality that she inwardly enjoyed very much, despite how frequently she had to give the girl an elbow to the ribs for saying something inappropriate. Her question was a valid one, at least, though she was kind of sad that Mia would think there was even a world where she would only be in Star City on business. She wanted to see her and Connor whenever possible. Hopefully that would be much more frequently now. As strongly as Dinah felt that being in Gotham was the best thing for her right now, she missed the family she still had here. "I came to see my girl, of course," she grinned. "Come on, let's go inside. I've gotta see if you've been keeping up on the dishes without me keeping you in line." She might be in Gotham now, but Dinah was not above making sure that the house was still in one piece in the absence of any parental figures.

”Hey! I have been doing the dishes! Connor’s the one who puts the clean ones away though and that typically happens after he wakes up. We even do grocery shopping and laundry! You should be totally proud of us.”[/b]
Mia gave Dinah a huge grin as she made her way towards the door to the house. Dinah was home, even for just a bit. She was home to see Mia, which put Mia in a good mood. It was nice to have someone else at the house besides Connor. It felt a bit like old times, before everything had gone to hell in a hand basket. Back when they would sit around at the dinner table, talk, then go watch a movie or dome something together as a family.
Now, Mia and Connor stuck together a lot during the daylight hours that they were awake for. Connor would disappear for a while to go meditate. It was interesting, just sitting around doing homework and everything being so quiet. It was unsettling. There had always been something going on in the Queen household. So, the silence really bugged Mia.
The training sessions between herself and Connor had gotten far more intense when Dinah had left. Sparring against each other was far more realistic then it had been. Connor had been teaching Mia some more martial arts. Mia had been in turn, teaching Connor how to pick a lock. Training involved not only physical aspects now, but Connor made Mia meditate. It was irksome at first until she had gotten a bit used to it.
”Well, we’ve missed you when sparring. I’ve taken Connor down a few times. But, it isn’t the same with out a referee there. Not to mention, no one is there to point out what we should do differently. “[/b]
Mia beamed as she headed down the stairs back into the house. She had always viewed Dinah as her mother. Her own memories of her biological mother were.. They were slim at best. Dinah was possibly the coolest mom ever too. Sure, she couldn’t make cookies very well. She was always there when needed and knew what to say to make you feel a bit better. OR, she would just find a way to get some sense back into your head.
Mia pointed over to the sink, which was totally free of dirty dishes and the clean ones were sitting on the drying rack, waiting for Connor to put them away. ”I told you so. Don’t worry Mom, it’s not like Connor and I have been secretly making out and fooling around with each other without any grown ups around. That would require Connor to not get all flustered and turn bright red.”[/b]
The younger blonde smiled as she joked around. She did not actually want to do anything with her brother.. That would be so weird. Not to mention, she suspected that he was gay. Not like Mia would say that out loud to Dinah, or anyone else for that matter.

Dinah rolled her eyes jokingly as she followed Mia to the door. "Mia, I've always been proud of you two, and dishes and laundry have nothing to do with it," she reminded her. They were such amazing kids, and it came as no surprise that they were managing to take of things just fine on their own. It wasn't like either of them were really kids now, either. They had both been strong and independent from the get-go, and even if they hadn't been, they were old enough know that they should know how to run a household with something resembling efficiency.
What did surprise Dinah was that Mia had been able to take Connor down, even just when they were sparring. The girl was one tough cookie and she could definitely handle herself, but Connor was on a whole different level as far as martial arts skill went. He was the only one in the family whose abilities surpassed even Dinah's. He was probably letting her get a few lucky shots in, which was sweet of him but not really helpful. Over-inflating Mia's sense of self-accomplishment would only put her in danger should she decide to challenge someone who greatly outmatched her. "Hey, I'd be happy to play ref slash coach when I'm around," Dinah offered. "I can be out here a lot more often now that the JLA can just beam me up."
The door that led back into the house swung open, and the nostalgia hit her like a brick wall. It felt like it had been so long since she had been in here, but it was exactly as she remembered it. Mia and Connor had done a great job of keeping everything clean and orderly. The one difference was that it was more quiet than it had perhaps ever been. She had grown way too accustomed to that kitchen being full of utter mayhem. Dinah opened her mouth to comment, but the younger woman's words caused her to grimace instead. If she wasn't so accustomed to such comments from Mia, she might have tripped over her own feet. Instead, Dinah groaned and clapped her hands over her ears. "La la la, I can't heeeaaar yooouuu," she said in a sing-song voice. Obviously Mia and Connor weren't really related, so if there was every anything between them it wouldn't be that weird, but to Dinah - who felt like a mother to each - it was just a little bit strange. It wasn't anything she wanted to picture, at any rate. She almost felt bad for Connor. He was so reserved, the exact opposite of his father... and Mia was essentially the young, female version of Ollie.

Mia rolled her eyes as Dinah went on with her sing song voice and pretended not to hear her. She knew that she would get a reaction out of the older blonde woman. Hence, why she had said it in the first place. Sure, Mia had a crush on Connor a while back. However, she didn’t anymore. She may still like to mess with his head and make him blush but that was different. Mia grabbed the arm of the older woman. ”Oh come on, Mom. You know I’d never actually do that to Connor. He might die on me or something. Besides, that would be some weird form of incest, and that’s gross! I wouldn’t risk infecting anyone else anyways.”[/b]
The blonde archer picked up the bottle of spirit gum remover and carefully applied it, taking off her mask. She closed the bottle and blinked a few times. It always felt a bit odd when she took it off. Mia simply smiled at Dinah, as though trying to figure a way to change the mood after her previous statement. She had recently gone in to get her blood counts done again. With everything that had been going on lately, Mia had been a bit sick for a while. Connor had made her stay home during that time period. She knew that other heroes would go out on patrol when they had a small cold or something. That was not an option for her though.
The young, blonde archer smiled widely as she sat in a chair and looked at her mother. It had seemed like so long since they had seen each other face to face. Mia was glad she was home for a bit. She wanted to ask if there had been any news from or about Ollie. The tiny blonde knew better though. Dinah’s ring still sat in the box on Ollie’s dresser in their room. Well, it was no one’s room now.
]”So, please tell me that whoever it is that works that beam is named Scotty. All the Star Trek jokes… You guys even have a spaceship. At least tell me their nickname is Scotty or something!”[/b]
Mia looked so excited about this. She was an admitted bit of a nerd. Virgil and Bart had drawn her into the world of Star Wars, Star Trek, and Doctor Who. The argument of which was the cooler tool, sonic screwdriver or light saber, was common amongst the three. She could not help but giggle.
Of course, Mia knew all good things would eventually come to an end. Her lab results would come in eventually. Those results would eventually put her T cell count at 200 or lower. The days of hanging at the Titans tower were gone already. Dinah would have to leave them again soon.
Mia knew that of the two people living in the house currently, one resembled Ollie more then the other. People tended to be skeptical about Connor when he said he was Ollie’s son initially. He was so calm and innocent and reserved. They had to look for the physical similarities and sometimes seeing Connor lost his temper, which was rare, got them to believe him. Mia would have no problem convincing anyone she was Ollie’s daughter though. She looked enough like him to pass as blood. Their personalities were very similar, although she liked to think she was way smarter and not as prone to causing problems by opening her mouth as Ollie was.
Mia saw on the calendar that written on it was an approximate day when her lab results should come in. It just brought her mind back to her impending doom. The possibility of infecting someone was too much of a risk for her. Not to mention the attached stigma of having HIV anyways. Kids were not much of an option for her either. Between being a hero and having HIV, it was risky. Then, after not protecting Lian. Mia sighed and shrugged. No need to worry Dinah with her troubled thoughts

Dinah chuckled as Mia grabbed her arm, freeing up her hearing once more. "Ahh, music to my ears," she sighed dramatically. Mia was an adult and Dinah didn't exactly expect her to resort to some kind of nun-like existence, so she was free to do what she liked so long as she was careful and nothing involved Connor. Even if it wasn't really incest, it would still be weird, as the younger blonde pointed out. It hadn't been as strange of a concept a few years ago when Mia had first come into their lives, but now they were all a tight-knit family. Or they had been, she reminded herself silently. Dinah couldn't be sure who was more guilty of ruining that: Ollie, or herself. Ollie may have set everything in motion but she was the one who had left. But then, she wasn't sure it would have been good to be around Mia and Ollie in the state of mind that she had been in until only recently.
The blonde took a seat at the kitchen table; even after not being home in so long, only after she had sat down did she realize she had subconsciously selected the seat she always took when sitting down for a meal. Some habits never died, she supposed. She ran her palm over the smooth surface of the table. Everything was just as she had left it, and yet everything had changed. Part of her was furious that the world hadn't seemed to halt in the midst of all of her personal drama, and part was extremely grateful for it. Dinah looked back up when Mia spoke again, then laughed. J'onn had fortunately managed to evade such a nickname on a regular basis, but that didn't stop her and a few other Leaguers from occasionally making the reference. "Not officially," Dinah grinned. "Though that doesn't stop anyone from calling him that every once in a while." The poor guy. Fortunately, J'onn often had a better sense of humor than his somber exterior would lead one to believe. She had to say, it was good to be back around him and the rest of the JLA. This line-up wasn't the one she was used to, but there were still a few people on the roster whom she had worked alongside for years. It was good to be back on a team with them.
Dinah followed Mia's gaze to the calendar and immediately understood what the notes on a marked day meant. It was good to see that the girl was still taking care of herself and staying on top of everything. Her illness could have ruined her life if she let it, but instead Mia did what she needed to do to manage it and enjoyed her life anyway. It said a lot about her personal strength. "You're taking all your meds, right? And you're not having any issues with insurance?" Dinah verified. She knew Mia was smart about handling her illness and that she didn't really need to worry, but her maternal side demanded that she make sure.

Mia sighed as rolled her eyes. Was she taking her meds still? She just scoffed at the question. ”Oh please Mom, of course I’m still taking my meds. I’m not having any trouble with insurance. That’s like asking if Connor is still highly possibly gay. “[/b]
Mia just smiled and laughed. She was trying so hard to keep from crying as she got up and got her pill container and swallowed her daily round of anti viral medications. She looked at Dinah, who sitting at her seat at the kitchen table. It was so easy for Mia to picture everyone else sitting around the table, laughing. Mia would most likely be getting chewed out by Dinah for something she said.
The younger blonde could not take it anymore. The memories and wanting everything to right back to the way it had been hurt too much all alone. So, she sat next to Dinah and hugged her tightly. ”You are not leaving again. I refuse to allow it. So, you are staying here, got it? Caus this is not up for discussion. “[/b]
Yeah, so Mia knew there would be a talk about this was not reasonable. That Gotham needed her or something. Dinah might even try to Canary cry her off, but Mia was not letting go at all. She had lost enough of their family and did not want to lost anyone else or have them leave.

Dinah laughed and held up her hands in a peaceful gesture. "Okay, okay, I just had to ask. And quit picking on Connor when the poor kid's not even here to defend himself." Mia taking her meds on a regular basis was expected, as was her tormenting Connor for his sexuality. Just because the guy wasn't chasing every skirt in Star City... Dinah was glad he didn't take after his father in that regard. It would save himself and the people around him a whole lot of misery. And hey, if he did turn out to be gay, then oh well. He wouldn't be the first.
The entertaining thought was cut off by Mia suddenly sitting down in the chair next to her and leaning over to trap her in a tight hug. The blonde reached up to return the girl's embrace, and when Mia spoke, she felt her heart sink. Dinah sighed quietly. "Mia, honey..." How was she supposed to explain what it felt like to be here? How could she possibly make Mia understand the guilt and anger that plagued her, or the overwhelming feeling of failure that surrounded her whenever she was in the home she had once shared with a family she loved so dearly? Her love for Connor and Mia was strong enough for her to make the trip to see them, but being here all the time... she couldn't do that. Not yet. She didn't plan on staying in Gotham forever, but for now she needed to be there. She needed the opportunity to heal. She refused to succumb to the negativity that this place brought on, and she couldn't do that while being immersed in everything that reminded her of all that had gone wrong.
Her grip around the younger woman tightened as she gently stroked her hair. "I can't, sweetie. I can't stay here." God, how she wished she could, if only for them. They had already gone through enough, but she knew she would do more harm than good if she was here. She never wanted them to see her taken down by her own personal failings. She needed to take the time to analyze those failures and find out what she could glean from them in order to grow and become even stronger than before. That's what failing was for, not for drowning in her own sorrow. Dinah drew back slightly, her hands on Mia's shoulders as she looked the girl in the eyes. "But I want you to understand something, okay?" she said firmly. "I am never leaving you and Connor. Ever. I love you both like crazy and if anyone or anything ever tries to keep me from either of you, I will go mama bear on its ass and personally feed it its own feet. Got it?"
Mia had already gone through enough, but Dinah hoped that she would at least recognize that even if she was no longer physically there all the time, she would always be a presence in Mia's life. That was never going to change. Not if she had anything to say about it.

Mia pulled away from her mother and scrunched up her face in response to the feeding something’s own feet to it statement. Now that was forming a very violent and gory mental image in her head. The younger blonde just gave Dinah an odd look. ”Thanks for the wonderful mental image, Mom. Now I don’t think I’m going to be able to eat properly for the next few days. Like, I think I might have to stop eating for the net two days. I don’t even want to know how you would manage to pull it off. Because, I know you would just.. Can we change the topic now?”[/b]
Mia’s voice started out as sarcastic but dragged into disgusted the more she thought of how that would be physically possible. It was not a pretty mental image, not at all. She sighed and nodded as she understood what Dinah had been saying. It was obvious that just being here hurt. Hell, even Mia had considered running away to some other city as to keep the bad memories at bay. She couldn’t leave Connor to take care of Star all by himself though.
It was a combination of guilt and pride that kept her in Star City. It was her city, her home. She wasn’t going to let it fall to ruin without trying to save it. The younger blonde smiled as she looked at Dinah. Dinah was her mom. There was no way her mom would ever stop loving either Connor or herself. Mia’s head turned as she heard the door open. Sure, there were no audible foot steps because Connor was a freaking ninja. Mia put a finger to her lips and hid behind a corner in wait for her older brother.
As Connor approached, Mia smirked and right before he passed the corner she jumped out and hugged him! There was a brief moment where Connor looked actually shocked and then hugged Mia back. ”Mia.. “ There was the small moment where it was just Connor and Mia again. Both of them had their eyes closed and just stood there for a bit, not needing to say anything. Then, Mia coughed a bit and smiled up at Connor. ”Guess who I found on the roof?”[/b]
Mia smiled as Connor looked up from her face and looked at Dinah. Neither one of them could hold back a smile. Mia knew she was always the more vocal one. Heck, of the two of them, she was the problem child. Connor smiled a bit at Dinah. ”Mom. I didn’t know you were coming.”
Connor gave Mia a look. Mia knew that look meant that she should have somehow communicated that Dinah was there. Connor would have stopped patrol early and come home. It wasn’t her fault. She just sort of forgot. She gave a nervous smile to Connor and an awkward laugh and shrugged.

Dinah rolled her eyes. Trust this family to keep things from being serious for too long. "I don't want to hear a word, you drama queen. You know how many times you've said things that've almost made me pass out?" Mia was infamous for her wildly inappropriate comments, and if she thought she could get away with dishing it out and not taking it, she was very sadly mistaken. Picturing some minor anatomical impossibilities wasn't the end of the world. If that was enough to gross Mia out, then she hadn't been doing this job long enough. Watching Lady Shiva bite someone's finger off had been the final test for Dinah's stomach. Since then, not even her own cooking could upset her gut.
The sound of the door opening caught her attention. Dinah glanced over at Mia and arched a brow as her intention to surprise Connor became clear. That girl had some serious cajones to try and sneak up on Connor. Sneaking up on someone as well-trained as him was the best way to earn a karate chop to the throat. Fortunately, it would seem that this wasn't the first time she had done such a thing, as Mia emerged unscathed. Dinah smiled both at the site of her stepson and at the embrace that he shared with Mia. They both had endured a lot lately and it was encouraging to see that they were still doing well. They still had each other to count on, which made being so far away from them just the slightest bit easier.
When their hug ended and Connor acknowledged her presence, Dinah grinned and rose from her seat."Gotta keep you on your toes somehow, don't I?" she asked as she moved to give Connor a hug of her own. If she had warned them that she was coming, she wouldn't have been able to see if they were really taking care of the place or if they had just scrambled to clean it up before she arrived. The latter was closer to how she had operated as a teenager, but they both were a lot more responsible then she had been. "Good to see you, kiddo."
