Personality-wise, Kara has a lot in common with her cousin, Clark. She is very noble and seeks to do good in a troubled world. However, oddly while she is technically older than Superman, she acts a bit less mature than he does (along with looking younger than him as well). She's very chipper and fun-loving, a tad reckless, and unfortunately a bit naive because of that.
Being an alien, there are those times when she feels like the outside looking in, especially being around normal humans. It doesn't get to her as much as it was did, but it still strikes a nerve now and then.

Kara was the daughter of Zor-El, Kal-El's uncle. When Brainiac attacked Krypton, Kara and her family were safe in Argo City. However, Brainiac returned to attack Argo and Kara was sent in a rocket-ship to Earth just like her cousin. Unfortunately, her ship was caught in a Kryptonite-encrusted meteor and she arrived on Earth years after her cousin. This explains why she looked and acted younger than Clark, despite being a teenager when he was a baby.
Kara was later found by Superman and trained by Wonder Woman. However, she was also later brainwashed by Darkseid, turning her against her cousin. Superman rescued her and helped fake her death to rid her of the villain. From there, she assumed the name of Supergirl. Lex Luthor also tried to make her evil, using Black Kryptonite to create Evil Kara/Dark Supergirl. Eventually, her good and evil sides separated, and were fused together in the noble Supergirl the world would come to know with the aid of Wonder Woman's Lasso of Truth.
Since then, Kara has, like Clark, lived a partial normal life as a student and member of the Kent family, but also like Superman, has become a member of the Justice League.

Kara Kent had a long day. Even with all her powers, nothing seemed to make her get into an advanced political science class with world's most boring professor... or the term paper that came along with it. But the fact was it was due in a week and counted for half the semester's grade. For now, Kara wanted to relieve some mental stress with a milkshake and perhaps a quick casual flight around the city.
That all changed as another of Luthor's giant robots had gotten loose and was attacking the city. Muttering a bit under breath, she stopped herself and thought of what Clark would say if he heard her complaining about aiding the city. Shaking it off, she gave the robot a stern look and found a place to change, removing her glasses school attire to reveal her Supergirl costume. Soaring with super speed toward the robot, she formed a double fist and hit him in the noggin, knocking him to the ground.
"Serves you right, ya big hunk of expensive junk!" she said with a silly smirk. Kara was the cute type and it wasn't always easy for her to act as tough as she was. She then looked around at the damage the robot had caused and saw a large gargoyle falling from a cathedral and falling toward a panicked mother holding her child.
"EEP!" said Kara before flying up and grabbed the statue just as it was about to land. She looked down and smiled at the baby. "He is adorable, ma'am." She then flew the statue up, sat it down and used her heat vision to reconnect it to its base.
Her plans from there? Throw the robot into the sun and see about that milkshake. The casual flight was cancelled.
